A-shaped architecture

These small chalets flourished in the 1950s and ’60s as humble vacation cabins for America’s booming postwar middle class. The craze continued to grow through the early 1970’s and eventually the structures were in such high demand that companies from Sears to plywood manufacturers began selling prefab A-frame kits.

The simple, often do-it-yourself construction, lends itself to rugged and remote locations. And while the A-frame obviously shares DNA with the tent, it offers a few more creature comforts. The classic shape and cozy interiors endear these homes to adventure seekers and design enthusiasts alike.

Time has proven the A-frame to be the ultimate escape, now synonymous with recreation and rustic leisure. It conjures the nostalgia of summer camp, the family cabin, s’mores.

Your only task should be lighting a fire.
